What is a Phonics Screening Check?
The Phonics Screening Check looks at a child’s ability to decode certain words. This involves sounding out both ‘pseudo-words’ made up for the test and real words.
All the ‘pseudo-words’ are accompanied with an image of an alien, to help in identifying the word and avoid matching it to a real word.
The test is split into two sections, with a total of 40 words that your child will be asked to say out loud.
Section 1:
Contains twelve ‘pseudo-words’ and eight real words.
Uses simpler structures, such as single letter and diagraph sounds.
Section 2:
Contains eight ‘pseudo-words’ and twelve real words.
Uses more complex structures, such as split diagraphs and sounds with alternate pronounciations.
The pass mark is usually 32/40.
